I purchased the pump and tried it out over the weekend. My first try was unsuccessful due to the problem of the pump head not staying on the valve when I attempted to pump air into it. After trying several attempts I aborted and planned to call Schwinn the next day. Seeing as I had a Schwinn Mountain bike and was trying to use a Schwinn pump, I figured they owed me an explanation on why thing was not working. When I got through to someone on the phone, a startling discovery was made. It was constantly falling off and I needed to unscrew the pump and put it back. Eventually it got stuck to the bottom of the pump and I couldn't get it out. All of this only after 10-15 uses. One day, after I had inflated two bicycle tires to 95 PSI and was almost done with a third tire, the pump's outlet valve exploded and shot out against the wall. From looking at the pieces, I figured out that the plastic outlet valve had melted, right in the middle, at the holes where the air exits into the hose. So it wasn't friction that had melted the plastic-- it was the heat of air compression. Lesson: a good pump has a metal outlet valve. |
